JOB DESCRIPTION: The Dually Certified Peer Advocate provides support services to individuals and their families who are receiving services from The Neighborhood Center, Inc. Integrated Treatment Program (ITP) who have dual diagnoses of mental health and substance use disorders. Peer Services are designed to enhance clinical treatment in order to increase client engagement and improve outcomes. Services target individuals who have complex needs due to co-occurring disorders. Services are delivered through face-to-face and/or telehealth support groups, phone calls, and individual/family meetings in the community and/or at clinic locations depending on the needs and preferences of the individual. The Peer Advocate will practice person-centered approaches to empower and support individuals and their families.


  • Develop a supportive, professional, strength-based relationship with clients by providing culturally competent, non-judgmental, empathetic care.
  • Conduct outreach and home visits as assigned including follow-up with clients transitioning from in-patient settings, clients referred for outpatient services, and clients that have not followed through with referrals/recommendations for services.
  • Co-facilitate groups and activities which foster client’s individual development and empowerment.
  • Attend court and other meetings and support clients to actively participate in planning their services.
  • Partner with clients and providers to track progress toward goals and revise plans as needed.
  • Assist clients in developing symptom management, self-care, and socialization skills.
  • Assist clients to enrich family relationships and rebuild natural support systems.
  • Assist clients to explore community-based resources, services, and socialization opportunities.
  • Utilize the Electronic Health Records system for documentation and record maintenance.
  • Complete required documentation accurately, efficiently, and in a timely manner.
  • Complete face-to-face client visits for the purpose of providing support, coordinating care, and/or providing education to assure greater compliance with treatment.
  • Attend and participate in staff/agency meetings and training as assigned.
  • Maintain self in a professional manner at all times, adhering to the Neighborhood Center, Inc.’s policies and procedures and in keeping with the Agency’s Mission Statement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • 18 years of age or older.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency required. Associate’s or Bachelor’s Degree in a Human Services related field preferred.
  • Has sufficient knowledge of recovery through overcoming the challenges resulting from a diagnosis of substance use and/or mental illness, or through being a caregiver/professional working with an individual using recovery services.
  • Must obtain the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services Certification within an acceptable timeframe, as The Neighborhood Center, Inc. and any regulatory bodies deemed.

Salary: $20.00 per hour
