POSITION: Perinatal Education Specialist

JOB DESCRIPTION: The Perinatal Education Specialist will work directly with the target community population: hosting perinatal/parenting support groups; co-facilitating Breastfeeding Cafes; arranging pregnancy/childbirth and breastfeeding classes; provide formal trainings for individuals and small groups of consumers and providers on Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, Healthy Babies are Worth the Wait, Infant Safe Sleep, Breastfeeding Essentials, Shaken Baby Syndrome, Safe Haven Law, Cavity Free Kids. The Perinatal Education Specialist provides support, and education to the Community Health Worker Supervisor and Community Health Workers as necessary.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Conducts educational presentations for health and human service providers on a number of perinatal health issues.
- Coordinates and interfaces with prospective speakers, presenters and partners on special projects.
- Collaborates with other agencies in the development of outreach activities to publicize services of the Mohawk Valley Perinatal Network (MVPN) and to promote behaviors leading to healthy outcomes for birthing families.
- Welcomes individuals into learning/sharing activities, stays alert to concerns and needs for resources, and encourages them toward finding social supports and helpful services.
- Works with Agency administration to strengthen ties with leaders of County Health Departments, hospitals, Department of Family and Community Services, medical practices, clinics, visiting nurses, Planned Parenthood, and school districts.
- Works with Agency Administration to recruit, prepare, and mentor consumers to represent their communities; increase their knowledge on perinatal topics; share information with others to promote healthy behaviors, address social determinants of health, and provide input into program activities.
- Coordinates mail list database for PICHC mailings.
- Works closely with Supervisor/Administrators and staff to monitor and assure completion of work plan activities.
- Contributes to development and completion of annual work plan, quarterly and annual reports.
- Represents Mohawk Valley Perinatal Network/The Neighborhood Center, Inc. at community meetings and/or with other agencies as directed.
- Coordinates and/or assists with special projects and events as required by the Agency.
- Assists in the analysis of perinatal and birth outcome data and its application to PICHC activities.
- Participates in community events (i.e. health fairs, conferences, etc.) to promote PICHC goals.
- Collaborates with community agencies on proposals/projects that fulfill goals of the PICHC.
- Maintains field reports on activities and include summary in quarterly reports to funders.
- Provides information and referrals to consumers and/or agencies, as appropriate.
- Maintains self in a professional manner at all time, adhering to The Neighborhood Center policies, procedures and mission. Performs other duties/tasks as assigned.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, including experience networking and building collaboration/partnerships.
- Demonstrated strong oral/written communication skills, including experience writing reports and meeting minutes.
- Knowledge of the delivery of health and human services.
- Demonstrated competent organizational skills.
- Demonstrated ability to craft and deliver public presentations.
- Demonstrated strong, competent computer skills, with solid experience in MS Word, Access, and Desktop Publisher.
- Possesses valid New York State Driver’s License and has transportation and able to meet the travel requirements of the job.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services, a Health Services field or other closely related field.
