Preswick Glen Residents Generously Donate Calm Corners to The Neighborhood Center

Utica, NY— The Frank Giovannone Memorial Giving Committee at Preswick Glen is proud to announce its sponsorship of three calm corners at The Neighborhood Center, a renowned facility dedicated to supporting children experiencing sensory issues and self-regulation problems.

The calm corners initiative created safe and nurturing spaces within The Neighborhood Center where children facing sensory challenges can find solace and support. These corners provide a tranquil environment equipped with sensory tools and resources designed to help children regulate their emotions and behavior effectively.

“We are thrilled to partner with an organization that truly cares and provides the services our children need,” said Larry Calabrese, a member of the committee.  “You can tell that the staff here are a family.”

On February 27th, the committee came for a tour of the agency and to see their calm corners at work.  Each developmental age group at the center has their own “calm corner” featuring a range of developmentally appropriate sensory tools and materials, including weighted blankets, fidget toys, sensory mats, and calming music. These resources will be carefully curated to cater to the diverse needs of children with sensory sensitivities and self-regulation difficulties.

“We are incredibly grateful to the committee for their generous sponsorship of these calm corners,” said Sabrina Lamie, the Director of Child Care and Family Services for The Neighborhood Center. “Their support has created nurturing environments where children can feel safe, supported, and empowered to develop essential self-regulation skills.  We use these spaces daily.”
