Family Ties

Family Ties

The Family Ties program is a Herkimer County based service providing short-term, intensive, outcome-driven service for children who are at risk of out-of-home placement and/or risk of placement in an alternative educational setting. Family Ties services are provided for up to six months in the child’s natural environment of home, school and community, seeking to build on personal and family strengths.

The program is a collaborative effort of the Herkimer County Office of Mental Health (OMH), Herkimer County schools and the Herkimer County Department of Social Services. All referrals are screened initially through Herkimer OMH.

The goal is to help families avoid out-of-home placement of children and achieve greater stability. The program works to improve the abilities of family members to problem-solve and communicate, to use their natural and community supports more efficiently and effectively. There is no fee for Family Ties which is recognized by the Herkimer County Office of Mental Health as an important preventive program.
